The Chase Bliss Dark World is a dual-engine reverb pedal that emerged from a three-way collaboration between Chase Bliss, Keeley Electronics, and Cooper FX. The premise is straightforward but unusually well-executed: take three classic, faithfully-voiced reverb algorithms (the "World" side, designed by Robert Keeley) and pair them with three deliberately weird, physics-defying reverb algorithms (the "Dark" side, designed by Tom Majeski of Cooper FX), all in a single pedal with multiple routing options. The result is one of the most flexible reverb pedals ever made — capable of providing both classic spring/plate/hall reverbs and abstract, granular, decaying soundscapes from the same chassis.
The World channel offers three traditional algorithms that Keeley describes as "one, two, and three dimensions of reflection": Spring (a one-dimensional spring tank with the splash and drip of vintage combo amps), Plate (the dense, two-dimensional studio plate sound used on countless 1970s and 1980s records), and Hall (a smooth, three-dimensional large room reverb). These are voiced for transparent, musical use and work well as a primary reverb on guitar, synth, vocal, or studio sources.
The Dark channel offers three Cooper FX algorithms that operate outside conventional reverb physics. Black is an "infinite" reverb that holds and slowly decays, with the decay rate responsive to playing dynamics — quiet passages let the reverb build, louder passages reset and rebuild it. Echo is a granular reverb-delay hybrid that breaks the wet signal into small chunks and rearranges them, producing artifact-rich textures. Mod is a heavily modulated reverb with pitch shifting and movement built into the algorithm. None of these are useful as primary reverbs in a traditional sense, but they are extraordinary for ambient, post-rock, and experimental playing.
The two channels can be routed in series (Dark first, then World, or vice versa), parallel (both engines running simultaneously and blended), or in a split configuration where one reverb processes the input and the other processes the wet signal of the first. A six-position routing dipswitch handles the configuration. Each channel has its own engagement footswitch, with the standard Chase Bliss feature set on top: 2 internal preset slots, full MIDI (Program Change, CC) over TRS, CV control of every parameter, expression pedal input, internal modulation (Ramping) of any knob, and dipswitches for deep parameter access.
The signal path is digital for the wet reverb signals with an analog dry-thru path. Bypass is selectable between true bypass (Trails off) and buffered bypass with reverb trails. Power is 9V centre-negative at around 200mA, the chassis is the standard Chase Bliss aluminium format, and the pedal is hand-built in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Dark World was officially discontinued by Chase Bliss, which has driven significant aftermarket demand and elevated used prices.
Who Is This For? The Dark World suits guitarists who want both classic and experimental reverbs in a single pedal. It is particularly well-suited to ambient, post-rock, and shoegaze players who use both faithful spring/plate/hall sounds and atypical granular or infinite reverb textures. Synth players also find it useful — the Dark side algorithms work especially well on synthesisers and drum machines where the unusual character can be a feature rather than a problem. Players who want only traditional reverbs would be better served by a Strymon BigSky or EHX Holy Grail; the value of the Dark World is precisely that it has both, and its discontinued status means clean used examples are increasingly hard to find.
