EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath

The EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath is one of the most distinctive and creatively rich reverb pedals on the market — a deliberately weird take on the reverb format that uses an array of short digital delay lines rather than a single reverb algorithm. The result is a reverb that can sound like a conventional spacious wash, a glittering granular cloud, a stuttering ping-pong delay, or something between all three depending on how the controls are set. Released in 2014, the Afterneath has gone through multiple revisions and remains one of EQD's most loved and most copied designs.

Where most reverb pedals process the signal through one reverb algorithm at a time, the Afterneath generates its sound from a bank of short digital delays that diffuse the input signal into a cloud of reflections. The Drag knob is the unique heart of the design: it controls the spread of the delay lines. Fully clockwise, the delays gather close together and behave like a traditional reverb. Fully counter-clockwise, the delays scatter into discrete repeats that sound like a stuttering ping-pong delay or granular shimmer. Between these extremes, the Afterneath produces sounds that sit in the territory between reverb, delay, and granular pitch effect — a tonal zone that few other pedals access at all.

The current production version (the V3, also marketed simply as Afterneath) adds nine selectable Modes that determine how the delay lines are tuned. The Unquantized modes let the Drag knob freely sweep through the delay tunings — Unquantized, Unquantized with Slew (smoother glide between settings), and Unquantized Volt/Octave (CV-controllable pitch). The remaining six modes quantise the delays to musical scales — Chromatic, Minor, Major (Lydian), Pentatonic, Octaves & Fifths, and Octaves only. In quantised modes, the Drag knob steps through musical intervals rather than freely sweeping, making it possible to create melodic, tonally-coherent reverb textures that work in a key.

Seven knobs handle the rest of the controls: Length sets decay time, Diffuse controls the spread from sharp/stuttering to washy/ambient, Dampen sets the tonal balance from bright to dark, Reflect is a feedback control (push it high enough and the pedal self-oscillates), and Mix sets the wet/dry balance. An expression pedal input accepts either a 50k expression pedal or a 0-5V control voltage signal, with the expression target reassignable internally — most players map it to the Drag knob for sweepable pitch effects.

Power is 9V DC centre-negative at 100mA, the bypass is electronic buffered (the wet signal trails when the pedal is bypassed, allowing reverbs to ring out naturally), and the chassis is the standard EQD format at 4.75" × 2.50" × 2.25". The pedal is hand-built in Akron, Ohio.

Who Is This For? The Afterneath suits guitarists who want a reverb that does more than add space — particularly ambient, post-rock, shoegaze, and experimental players who use reverb as a textural and rhythmic element. The Drag knob's sweep from delay-like to reverb-like opens up sounds that no other pedal produces in quite the same way, and the quantised musical modes make it useful as a melodic reverb-arpeggiator hybrid that fits into a song key. Synth players also find it compelling — the granular character works particularly well on synth pads, drum machines, and processed line-level sources. Players who want a clean, transparent room or hall reverb should look elsewhere; the Afterneath is for players who want their reverb to be an active, identifiable voice in the mix.
