The Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail family is one of the longest-running and most successful reverb pedal lines in modern guitar gear. Introduced in 2003 as a compact, three-knob reverb with three classic algorithms, the original Holy Grail brought studio-quality reverb to a price point and footprint that fitted onto any pedalboard. The current top-of-the-line model is the Holy Grail Max, which keeps the simple front panel and immediate appeal of the original while adding additional algorithms and refining the audio quality.
The Holy Grail Max offers four reverb modes — Spring, Hall, Plate, and Reverse — selected via a single rotary switch. Spring delivers the classic combo-amp spring tank character with the characteristic splash and drip that has been a guitar signature since the 1960s. Hall is a smooth, large-room studio hall reverb with a long, even decay. Plate is denser and more diffuse, modelled on the metal-plate studio reverbs of the 1970s and 1980s, and works equally well on guitar and other sources. Reverse mode plays the reverb tail backwards, swelling each note in reverse — a classic effect that has appeared on countless ambient and dream-pop records.
Three knobs handle the controls: Blend sets the wet-to-dry mix from fully dry to fully wet (the analog dry signal stays intact at all times), Time controls decay length and reverb size, and the Reverb selector chooses the algorithm. There is no Tone or Modulation control on the front panel — the Holy Grail philosophy has always been to keep the interface simple and let players dial in usable sounds quickly. The audio path is digital, with a true-bypass relay and a single 1/4" input and output for mono operation.
Power is supplied via the included 9.6VDC 200mA adapter, with current draw at 80mA — manageable on most pedalboard supplies. The pedal measures 4.75" × 4" × 2.25", larger than the Holy Grail Nano but compact for what it offers. The Holy Grail line currently includes the Nano (compact format, three reverb modes), the Neo (mid-size, three modes including Flerb), and the Max (mid-size, four modes including Reverse) — each at a different price point and feature level.
Who Is This For? The Holy Grail Max suits guitarists who want straightforward, high-quality reverb without diving into the menu-driven complexity of larger reverb pedals. It is particularly well-suited to players who use reverb as a colour rather than as a primary effect — adding subtle space to clean tones, a touch of room to driven sounds, or occasional reverse swells for ambient passages. The simple three-knob interface makes it easy to dial in usable sounds quickly, and the four algorithms cover the most useful reverb flavours without overlap. Players who want shimmer, modulated reverb, or deep parameter control should look at the Strymon BigSky or similar workstation reverbs; for direct, immediate reverb that just works, the Holy Grail Max is hard to beat.
