The Gibson SG Standard is one of the most recognisable electric guitars ever made. Originally introduced in 1961 as a redesign of the Les Paul, the SG's distinctive double-cutaway body, slim neck, and lightweight build have made it a favourite of rock, blues, and metal players for over six decades. Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Derek Trucks, and Frank Zappa all built their sound around SGs, and the guitar continues to be one of Gibson's best-selling models.
Body and Build
The SG Standard features an all-mahogany construction — solid mahogany body with a mahogany neck, giving it a warm, resonant midrange character. At around 3.2–3.4kg (7–7.5lbs), it is significantly lighter than a Les Paul, which makes it comfortable for long gigs and practice sessions. The double-cutaway design provides exceptional upper fret access — you can reach the full 22 medium jumbo frets with ease. The neck joins the body at the 22nd fret, higher than almost any other Gibson, which contributes to the SG's distinctive feel and sustain characteristics.
Neck and Playability
The rounded mahogany neck profile is inspired by mid-1960s SGs, offering a comfortable, familiar grip. The rosewood fingerboard has a 12-inch radius with acrylic trapezoid inlays and a Graph Tech nut at 1.695 inches wide. The 24.75-inch scale length (standard Gibson) gives it a slightly slacker string tension than Fender-scale guitars, making bends easier and contributing to the SG's characteristically fluid playing feel.
Pickups and Electronics
The current SG Standard is equipped with Gibson 490R (neck) and 490T (bridge) humbuckers — Alnico II magnets that deliver a classic PAF-inspired tone with a slight emphasis on upper midrange. The neck pickup is warm and vocal, excellent for blues and clean tones. The bridge pickup has enough bite for hard rock and classic metal without being overly hot. Controls are standard Gibson — two volumes, two tones, and a three-way toggle switch. The aluminium Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece provide solid intonation and sustain.
Finish and Hardware
The SG Standard is finished in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer, which ages naturally and is considered tonally superior to polyurethane by many players. Heritage Cherry is the iconic finish, though Ebony, Vintage Cherry, and other options are available depending on the production year. Keystone tuners and a standard Gibson hardshell case complete the package.
Who Is This For?
- Rock and blues guitarists who want a lightweight, resonant guitar with classic humbucker tones
- Gigging musicians who need a comfortable, reliable instrument for long sets
- Players moving from Les Paul who want the same Gibson scale and pickup format in a lighter body
- Metal and hard rock players who appreciate the SG's fast neck and aggressive midrange
The SG Standard sits below the Les Paul Standard in Gibson's lineup by price but is not a lesser instrument — it is simply a different tool. Where the Les Paul is thick and sustained, the SG is aggressive, vocal, and immediate. Many players prefer it, and it has earned its place as one of the greatest electric guitar designs in history.
