The Dreadbox Typhon is a compact, USB-powered monophonic analog synthesizer developed by Greek synth maker Dreadbox in collaboration with Sinevibes, the software team behind some of the best-regarded audio effect plugins available. That collaboration defines the Typhon's character: a genuinely analog signal path — dual VCOs, a 24 dB low-pass filter, two full ADSR envelopes — paired with a sophisticated 32-bit/96 kHz stereo DSP effects engine that punches well above what you'd expect at this price.
At its core, the Typhon runs two analog oscillators with continuous wave morphing, fed into a resonant low-pass filter capable of aggressive self-oscillation. Three independently assignable modulators — each switchable between LFO, envelope, random, and step sequencer modes — can target 14 different destinations including pitch, filter cutoff, waveshapes, and effects parameters. That modulation depth is unusual in a synth this small and affordable.
The effects engine, built by Sinevibes to the same standard as their standalone Mac plugins, offers 12 types across distortion, bit crushing, chorus, ensemble, flanger, delay, and reverb — with three slots running simultaneously and stereo output. Running at 32-bit/96 kHz, the quality is noticeably above typical effects found in synths at this price point.
A 32-step sequencer and 256 preset slots across four banks make the Typhon ready for live performance and deep sound design alike. An external audio input routes any signal through the analog filter, amp envelope, and effects chain, effectively turning the Typhon into a standalone effects processor when you want it to be.
Power comes via USB, and the Typhon will run comfortably from a standard 20,000 mAh power bank for many hours. It also functions as a USB audio interface, so you can record directly to a computer without additional hardware.
Who Is This For?
The Typhon suits producers and performers who want a serious-sounding analog synth in a form factor small enough to throw in a bag. Its USB power and built-in audio interface make it exceptionally self-contained for live use or travel. Beginners will find 256 presets and a clear front-panel layout a reasonable starting point; more experienced sound designers will appreciate the modulation depth and the effects quality. It's also a compelling option for anyone wanting a compact external filter and effects processor — the audio input makes it genuinely dual-purpose.
