Behringer DeepMind 12

The Behringer DeepMind 12 is a 12-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer and Behringer's flagship keyboard instrument. Launched in 2016, it arrived as one of the most affordable true polyphonic analog synthesizers ever made — offering 12 independent analog voice circuits at a price that undercut the competition dramatically.

Each of the 12 voices runs two digitally controlled analog oscillators (DCOs), three ADSR generators, and two LFOs. OSC1 produces sawtooth and square/pulse waveforms with pulse width modulation; OSC2 produces square/pulse with tone modulation. A selectable 12 dB or 24 dB analog low-pass filter per voice handles the shaping, capable of self-oscillation, with a global high-pass filter and bass boost switch rounding out the tone controls.

The modulation matrix — 8 channels with 19 sources and over 130 destinations, including effects parameters — gives the DeepMind 12 programming depth well beyond its price class. Add polyphonic portamento, chord and poly-chord memory, and a sophisticated arpeggiator with tap tempo and user-configurable pattern modes, and there's a capable performance instrument here alongside the sound design tools.

Where the DeepMind 12 really distinguishes itself is the effects section: four simultaneous FX engines running TC Electronic and Klark Teknik algorithms at 24-bit/48 kHz, covering reverb, chorus, flanger, phaser, delay, and multi-band distortion. The quality of these effects is a significant part of why the DeepMind 12's pads and strings have become so well regarded.

A 32-step control sequencer, 1,024 user presets, and full remote control via iPad, Mac, and PC over USB, MIDI, or the built-in Wi-Fi complete the package. The 49 semi-weighted keys include velocity sensitivity and aftertouch, and 26 dedicated sliders give direct access to the most important parameters without menu diving.

Who Is This For?

The DeepMind 12 suits producers and composers who want lush, wide polyphony — layered pads, strings, chords — without the price tag of boutique or vintage alternatives. Its 12 analog voices, stacking modes, and professional-grade effects make it particularly strong for ambient, cinematic, and electronic music production. It's also a practical live keyboard: the direct-access sliders, arpeggiator, chord memory, and Wi-Fi app control offer genuine hands-on flexibility. Players who already have a controller keyboard may prefer the DeepMind 12D desktop version, which offers the same sound engine in a smaller, rack-mountable form factor.
