Softube Tape

Softube Tape is a best-selling tape emulation plugin that brings the warmth, saturation, and subtle imperfections of analog tape machines to your DAW. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach, Tape gives you three meticulously modeled tape machine types, each with its own distinct character. It is one of those plugins that can live on every channel in your session, gently gluing the mix together with analog-style cohesion.

Three Tape Machine Types

The heart of Softube Tape is its three selectable tape machine models. Type A is based on a Swiss high-end reel-to-reel machine known for precision and linearity, perfect for transparent warming without heavy coloring. Type B is a transformer-based machine that adds extra weight and cream to the low end, ideal for thickening drums and bass. Type C is modeled after a British tape machine with a distinct vintage vibe, great for adding grit and old-school character. Each type responds differently to input levels, so pushing them harder yields different flavors of saturation.

Controls and Sound Shaping

Beyond the tape type selector, Softube includes a thoughtful set of controls. The Tape Speed knob steps through five settings from 30ips down to 1.875ips, with lower speeds rolling off high frequencies and adding more color. Speed Stability simulates wow and flutter for convincing pitch wobble, and when combined with the Dry/Wet mix knob, can produce flanging and chorus effects. The High Frequency Trim acts as a mastering-grade shelving filter to brighten or darken the top end. Crosstalk bleeds the left and right channels into each other, boosting center punch and weight at higher settings. The plugin ships with presets created by Grammy-winning engineers including Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2) and Howard Willing (Smashing Pumpkins).

Performance and Integration

Softube Tape is designed to be CPU-efficient enough to run on every track in a session without overloading your system. For Studio One users, the plugin can be loaded into the MixFX slot as Tape Multitrack, which adds selectable crosstalk between individual tracks controlled from a single interface. The plugin supports VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats and runs natively on Apple Silicon.

Who Is This For?

  • Mix engineers who want analog tape warmth on individual tracks or the mix bus
  • Producers looking for subtle saturation and harmonic richness without heavy-handed distortion
  • Mastering engineers who need a transparent, high-quality tape coloring tool
  • Studio One users who can take advantage of the Tape Multitrack MixFX feature

Softube Tape is not a flashy effect but a workhorse utility plugin. If your mixes sound too clean, sterile, or digital, running Tape across your session can add the cohesion and weight that analog tape naturally provides. It is one of the more convincing tape emulations available and well worth auditioning.
