Waves SSL G-Master Buss Compressor

The SSL Bus Compressor is one of the most copied circuits in audio production — a VCA-based compressor from the G-series console that defined the sound of countless hit records through the 1980s and 90s. Waves' emulation has been a staple of mixing sessions since its original release, offering the characteristic glue, punch, and density of the hardware at a fraction of the price.

At its core, the SSL G-Master Buss Compressor is built for bus and mix duties. The six-position attack and release controls mirror the hardware's stepped knobs, and the ratio options of 2:1, 4:1, and 10:1 cover everything from gentle cohesion to hard limiting. It's the 2:1 and 4:1 settings that most mixers reach for — the kind of transparent-but-present compression that makes a mix feel finished rather than processed.

The plugin has evolved considerably from its original release. Version 14 introduced a Mix knob for parallel compression without routing external buses, which opened up a far wider range of applications. V15 added a sidechain filter — available at 100Hz or 200Hz — which lets the compressor ignore low-frequency content and prevents kick drums from pumping the entire mix. These are both features the original hardware lacked, and they make the Waves version genuinely more flexible in modern sessions.

The Analog switch activates additional harmonic colouration modelled from the hardware circuitry. Some engineers swear by it for adding presence and shimmer; others prefer the cleaner response of the digital mode. Both are useful, and the difference is subtle enough that you'll want to A/B it on individual mixes rather than defaulting to one setting.

One thing to understand about the SSL Bus Compressor is how it interacts with low-frequency content. With fast attack times and moderate to high gain reduction, bass-heavy material can cause audible pumping — sometimes desirable, often not. The sidechain filter in V15 addresses this directly, and pairing a slower attack with the Auto release setting tends to yield the most natural results on full-mix duties.

Chris Lord-Alge is perhaps the most visible proponent of the plugin, with a set of factory presets included under his name. His settings lean into faster attack times and heavier gain reduction than many engineers would use, but they illustrate how the compressor handles transient shaping as much as level control.

At its current price point it's one of the most cost-effective tools in any mix engineer's toolkit — and the perpetual licence means you own it outright, separate from any subscription.

Who Is This For?

Engineers wanting the SSL Bus Compressor sound without hardware costs or SSL's own plugin pricing. Useful on mix buses, drum buses, and any situation where you want cohesion without audible compression artefacts. The Mix knob and sidechain filter make it more versatile than the hardware it emulates.
