The Boss ME-80 Guitar Multiple Effects was Boss's attempt to bridge the gap between traditional stompbox operation and multi-effects processing — and it largely succeeded. Now discontinued in favour of the ME-90, it continues to trade actively on the used market because its approach to control, using physical knobs and switches rather than menus, appeals directly to players who find conventional multi-effects units unintuitive.
Eight effects categories each have their own dedicated knob section: Comp/FX1, OD/DS, Preamp, EQ/FX2, MOD, Delay, Reverb, and Pedal FX. Within each category, the type selector and parameter knobs are always visible and always directly accessible. There are no sub-menus to navigate mid-song. Switching from a chorus to a phaser in the MOD section is a knob turn, not a button press and scroll sequence. This immediacy is what distinguishes the ME-80 from more menu-driven processors.
Eight footswitches and an expression pedal cover both Memory mode — which recalls full patch presets — and Manual mode, where each footswitch controls an individual effects category as though they were discrete stompboxes. Manual mode is where most players spend their time, as it provides the direct, real-time control of a pedalboard without the weight or patchcable complexity.
The preamp section uses COSM modelling derived from the GT-100 flagship, covering clean, crunch, metal, and acoustic simulation voices. A USB audio interface function enables direct recording to a computer without additional hardware. 36 user and 36 preset patch locations provide enough storage for most live setups.
Who Is This For?
The ME-80 suits gigging guitarists who want a practical, all-in-one solution without the learning curve of menu-driven processors. Its knob-per-function layout is immediately familiar to anyone who has used individual pedals. On the used market it represents strong value for the processing quality and build quality on offer, particularly for players who are price-sensitive but need reliable live functionality.
