The Boss RC-5 Loop Station is the current successor to the RC-3, bringing meaningful upgrades across audio quality, connectivity, and integration while retaining the same compact form factor. Released in 2020, it processes audio at 32-bit floating point internally and offers MIDI in and out via stereo mini-jack connectors — a significant addition for players who want to sync loops to external gear or a DAW.
The 99 phrase memories carry over from the RC-3, but each phrase can now store loop audio alongside the associated rhythm and tempo settings, meaning your setlist is genuinely recall-ready without manual adjustment between songs. Total recording capacity across all memories is approximately 13 hours, with around 1.5 hours available per single phrase.
MIDI connectivity opens up practical live performance possibilities. The RC-5 can sync to an external MIDI clock, enabling tight integration with drum machines, sequencers, or DAW playback. It can also transmit MIDI messages, allowing it to trigger external devices in response to loop transport commands. For players building more complex live rigs, this is a genuine step forward from the RC-3.
BOSS Tone Studio for RC (Windows/macOS) provides desktop-side editing — phrase management, rhythm customisation, and settings backup. The built-in rhythm section has been expanded significantly over the RC-3, with 57 patterns × 2 variations across 7 drum kits, covering a wide range of styles and tempo ranges.
The single footswitch operation — record, overdub, play in sequence — remains the same as the RC-3, keeping the RC-5 immediately familiar. An external control jack accepts a footswitch for additional transport functions. Audio quality is noticeably cleaner than earlier RC units thanks to the 32-bit floating point processing.
Who Is This For?
The RC-5 suits players who want a compact loop station with professional audio quality and MIDI sync capability. It's ideal for solo performers integrating loops with drum machines or backing tracks, and for players building setlist-ready phrase libraries for live use. Those who need only basic looping without MIDI may find the used RC-3 equally sufficient at a lower price.
