The Boss TU-3 Chromatic Tuner is the de facto standard for pedalboard tuning. Since replacing the TU-2 in 2009, it has appeared on more professional pedalboards than arguably any other single pedal — a status earned through consistent accuracy, a readable display, and a practical set of features that go beyond basic tuning.
Accuracy is quoted at ±1 cent across a tuning range spanning C0 to C8, which covers guitar, bass, extended-range instruments, and most other chromatic instruments. The reference pitch is adjustable from A4 = 436 to 445 Hz in 1 Hz increments, accommodating players who tune to non-standard concert pitch. Seven-string guitars and five and six-string basses are supported as named instrument modes alongside standard chromatic mode.
The 21-segment LED display operates in two modes. Cent mode shows the tuning deviation in conventional sharp/flat fashion. Stream mode presents a strobe-style display that moves left or right depending on pitch direction, providing higher resolution visual feedback useful in noisy environments or for players who prefer the classic strobe tuner aesthetic. High Brightness mode significantly increases display intensity for outdoor use in direct sunlight.
The Accu-Pitch function provides a visual confirmation flash when the note reaches its target pitch — a small but genuinely useful indicator that removes ambiguity when tuning in a noisy room.
Two practical features extend the TU-3 beyond pure tuning. The Bypass output passes signal to a second destination while the main output is muted for silent tuning — allowing the TU-3 to drive a secondary amp or monitoring device during tuning breaks. The DC Out jack can power an additional Boss compact pedal via a daisy-chain cable, functioning as a basic power distribution point.
Who Is This For?
The TU-3 suits every guitarist who uses a pedalboard. It is the benchmark compact tuner pedal — reliable, accurate, readable, and practical. Players who have tried alternatives frequently return to it. The used market is liquid and prices are consistent, making it a sensible buy new or second hand.
