The Boss RC-3 Loop Station packs three hours of stereo recording time and 99 phrase memories into the compact Boss stompbox format — a combination that made it one of the most practical loop pedals available when it launched, and continues to make it a sensible choice on the used market. It was discontinued in the early 2020s but trades regularly in good condition.
Operation is straightforward: a single footswitch controls record, overdub, and playback in sequence. Press once to record your first layer, press again to overdub additional layers, press a third time to play back without overdubbing. A second press-and-hold stops playback. The two small arrow buttons step through the 99 phrase memory slots, and a separate Write button saves loops for later recall. Rhythm patterns with adjustable volume serve as a built-in metronome or backing, useful for practice sessions.
The stereo input and output pairing — two inputs and two outputs — allows the RC-3 to work transparently in stereo rigs, passing the dry signal through while layering loops. An auxiliary input accepts a stereo mini-jack for playing along with a phone or music player, useful for practice. USB connectivity enables transferring audio files to and from a computer in WAV format, so recorded loops can be used in a DAW or pre-recorded backing tracks loaded onto the pedal.
With three hours of recording time at 44.1 kHz / 16-bit stereo, the RC-3 is more than capable for live looping, practice, and composition sketching. The 99 phrase slots mean you can store setlist-ready loops for live performance without clearing between songs.
Who Is This For?
The RC-3 suits solo performers who want a straightforward loop pedal for live layering, practice players using loops as backing, and songwriters building loop-based sketches. It's simpler and less feature-dense than current loop stations, but its ease of use and long battery-free recording capacity make it a consistently solid used-market buy.
