The Boss ME-90 Guitar Multiple Effects is the current flagship of Boss's knob-per-function multi-effects line, succeeding the ME-80 with a substantial upgrade in amp modelling, effects count, and connectivity. Released in 2023, it uses the AIRD (Augmented Impulse Response Dynamics) amp modelling technology derived from the GT-1000 — Boss's top-tier guitar processor — bringing genuinely high-quality amp simulation to a format that prioritises physical control over menu navigation.
Eleven onboard AIRD amp models each come with dedicated cabinet voicing, and the ME-90 supports loading up to three user impulse responses via the ME-90 IR Loader software, enabling third-party speaker cabinet simulation. This makes it directly competitive with more expensive modelling units when combined with external IRs. Additional amp and effects options are accessible through BOSS Tone Studio desktop software, which extends the onboard count considerably.
97 effects types across seven categories — with 60 available onboard and more via Tone Studio — cover every processing need from compression and overdrive through modulation, delay, reverb, and the dedicated Pedal FX section. The 38-second phrase looper in mono enables practice and simple live layering without a separate pedal.
The physical layout follows the ME-80 template: each effects category has dedicated knobs and a type selector, always accessible without menu navigation. Eight footswitches operate in Memory mode for patch recall or Manual mode for stompbox-style individual control. The expression pedal with toe switch handles wah and volume duties or can be assigned to any other continuous parameter.
USB-C connectivity serves both audio interface and Tone Studio integration. The power supply accepts four AA batteries, making it genuinely portable for practice away from a power source.
Who Is This For?
The ME-90 suits gigging guitarists who want modern amp modelling quality in a physically intuitive, no-menu-diving format. It's particularly strong for players who want to cover multiple amp characters across a setlist without carrying a full pedalboard — and for those who want direct recording capability without additional hardware.
