The Model:Cycles is Elektron's most approachable entry into FM synthesis — a six-track groovebox that makes a notoriously complex technique feel immediate. Where traditional FM synthesis asks you to navigate operator ratios and modulation indices, the Cycles packages all of that into six purpose-built Machines: Tone, Chord, Kick, Snare, Metal, and Perc. Each is tuned for its role and controlled through the same familiar set of knobs, so you're shaping FM sounds without needing to understand FM theory.
The sequencer is the other reason people buy Elektron. Even in the entry-level Model range, you get the full Elektron step sequencer — 64 steps per track, independent track lengths, parameter locks, micro timing, and trig conditions. Parameter locks let you automate any knob value on a per-step basis. Trig conditions let individual steps fire conditionally — every other loop, randomly, only after a fill — the kind of variation that keeps a pattern alive without manually programming every change.
Six tracks cover most patterns you'd want to build: leads, chords, kick, snare, hi-hats or percussion, and an additional melodic or textural layer. The Chord Machine is the standout — polyphonic FM chords in a box this small and affordable is genuinely impressive. Delay and reverb send effects round out the signal chain without adding complexity.
Who Is This For?
The Model:Cycles suits producers who want Elektron's workflow — the sequencer, the parameter locks, the live performance tools — without committing to the price or depth of the Digitone. It's also a strong first FM synthesizer for anyone who's been put off by the complexity of traditional FM: the Machine structure removes the theory and gets you straight to the sound. Battery-powered via USB and under 400g, it's genuinely portable. If you want something to sketch ideas on the move, or a focused second instrument that won't take over your desk, the Model:Cycles punches well above its price on the used market.
