The Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave 24M is the desktop module version of the flagship 3rd Wave synthesizer. It offers the full 24-voice polyphony and 4-part multitimbral capability of the keyboard version in a compact desktop format, ideal for studio setups where a keyboard isn't needed.
Designed by Bob Coover -- who previously worked with Dave Smith on instruments like the Prophet-12 and OB-6 -- the 3rd Wave combines classic 8-bit wavetable character with a fully analog signal path. The 24M shares the identical sound engine with the 24K keyboard: three oscillators per voice with access to PPG-derived 8-bit wavetables, high-resolution 96 kHz wavetables, and analog-modeled wavetables. The Wavemaker tool lets you create up to 64 custom wavetables or convert audio input into wavetables in real time.
The dual filter architecture is a standout feature: a Dave Rossum-designed 2140 analog low-pass filter with variable saturation, plus an SEM-style state-variable filter offering low-pass, high-pass, notch, and band-pass modes. The entire signal path from filter to output stays in the analog domain.
The modulation system includes four LFOs and four ADSR envelopes routable via 16 freely assignable mod slots to over 100 destinations. Each of the four multipart layers gets its own pair of digital effects. A built-in pattern sequencer handles notes, songs, and parameter automation.
Who Is This For?
- Studio producers who already have a master keyboard
- Sound designers wanting the full 3rd Wave experience without the keyboard footprint
- Those who prefer the 24M's price point (~$1,000 less than the 24K keyboard)
- Serum users who want hardware wavetable compatibility
The 24M delivers everything the flagship 24K does, minus the keys. Patches are fully compatible between all 3rd Wave models.
