The Korg MicroKorg is the synthesizer that refuses to disappear. Released in 2002, it remains in production and on stages worldwide — a testament to its combination of sound, portability, price, and that vocoder.
Sound Engine
Virtual analog synthesis built on the same DSP engine as Korg's MS2000. Two oscillators per voice offer saw, square, triangle, sine, and noise waveforms, plus oscillator sync, ring modulation, and cross modulation for more complex timbres. The 12dB and 24dB resonant filters handle everything from subtle warmth to screaming acid. Four voices handle most musical situations, and the voice architecture supports both single and layer timbres for stacking two sounds together.
The Vocoder
The 8-band vocoder with included gooseneck microphone became the MicroKorg's defining feature. Robotic vocals, talkbox-style effects, and vocal synthesis are immediately accessible — plug in, select a vocoder patch, and play chords while speaking into the mic. It's the reason the MicroKorg appears everywhere from indie rock to electronic music. The mic input also works with external sources for processing other instruments through the vocoder.
Programming and Presets
Programming happens via the small display and five knobs mapped through an Edit Select matrix — not ideal for deep editing, but workable once you learn the layout. The 128 presets (64 in bank A, 64 in B) cover substantial ground from thick basses to shimmering pads. An included software editor provides full visual editing from a computer. Battery operation on 6 AA cells enables true mobility, and at 2.2 kg it barely registers in a gig bag.
Who Is This For?
The MicroKorg suits musicians needing affordable, portable synthesis:
- Gigging keyboardists wanting backup synth and vocoder in a small package
- Bedroom producers getting into hardware synthesis on a budget
- Vocoder enthusiasts seeking the most accessible vocal processing available
- Bands needing synth sounds without keyboard player complexity
- Beginners learning synthesis fundamentals with immediate results
For deeper synthesis, look at Minilogue. For affordable portability with that vocoder, the MicroKorg endures for good reason.
