The Korg Volca FM2 is the refined successor to one of the most beloved entries in the Volca series. Where the original Volca FM brought affordable FM synthesis to a pocket-sized format, the FM2 doubles the voice count to six, adds a new reverb effect alongside the existing chorus, and introduces MIDI velocity sensitivity — addressing the main limitations of its predecessor in one update.
At its core is the same DX7-derived engine that made the original so compelling: six operators, 32 algorithms, and full SYS-EX/SYX compatibility. This means decades of DX7 patch libraries are available to load directly. The Synthmata online editor (developed with Oscillator Sink) provides patch editing without any software installation required.
Sound design is accessible even if you're new to FM. The modulator/carrier knobs each control multiple parameters simultaneously, giving you musically useful results without needing to understand the full operator matrix. For those who want to go deeper, a full parameter editor mode exposes individual operator controls, and a program randomiser is on hand when you want unexpected inspiration.
Who Is This For?
The Volca FM2 suits producers and musicians who want genuine FM synthesis without the cost or complexity of vintage hardware or high-end modern alternatives. It's particularly good for anyone drawn to classic DX7 tones — electric pianos, metallic basses, bells, and evolving pads — who also wants a hands-on sequencer and live performance tools. The MIDI out via TRS is a notable addition for those who want to drive other hardware from the Volca's onboard sequencer. Battery power and compact dimensions make it viable for travel and live use.
