The MOTU M4 is the step up from the M2 that adds two additional line inputs, four balanced outputs, and a hardware monitor mix knob — the additions that matter most when moving from a basic home recording setup to a more fully-featured studio configuration.
The core electronics are identical to the M2: ESS Sabre32 Ultra DAC converters, -129dBu EIN preamps, DC-coupled outputs for Eurorack CV, full-colour LCD metering, and 5-pin MIDI in and out. The difference is the I/O count and the hardware monitor control. Four balanced outputs allow running two pairs of monitor speakers simultaneously — useful for A/B comparison between reference mixes — or routing signals to outboard hardware effects and returns. The dedicated monitor mix knob on the hardware blends direct input monitoring with DAW playback without going into software, which is the practical day-to-day improvement over the M2.
One limitation to note: the two additional line inputs (inputs 3 and 4) have a fixed +18dBu input level with no gain adjustment. Most professional line-level gear outputs +4dBu, which works fine, but some consumer equipment running at -10dBV may not drive inputs 3 and 4 to an adequate level. It is not a problem in most setups but worth checking if you have unusual line sources.
The M4 sits in a useful gap: more capable than the Scarlett 4i4 (which it directly competes with), with better converters and metering at a modest premium. The MOTU's DC-coupled outputs and lower latency differentiate it for producers with modular or software instrument setups.
Who Is This For?
- Home studio producers with multiple inputs and outputs who have outgrown basic two-in/two-out interfaces
- Eurorack and modular users needing DC-coupled CV outputs alongside standard recording
- Studios running two sets of monitor speakers for A/B referencing
- Producers who want hardware monitor level control without going into software
