The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 is the step up from the 2i2 that adds MIDI, two extra line inputs, and four balanced outputs — the additions that matter most for a producer-oriented home studio setup. It is the first model in the Scarlett range capable of connecting external MIDI gear directly, and the four outputs allow dual monitor configurations or routing to outboard effects.
The 4th generation (2023) brought the same converter upgrade as the rest of the range — RedNet-grade Cirrus Logic chips, 120dB dynamic range, and 69dB preamp gain — but the 4i4 benefits most from the additional output headroom. The headphone amplifier was also substantially improved, going from 108dB to 115dB dynamic range — a meaningful jump for monitoring. The two mic preamps match the 2i2 in quality; the two additional inputs are balanced line-level only, intended for synthesisers, drum machines, or hardware effects returns.
The MIDI I/O is the practical reason most users step up from the 2i2. Connecting a MIDI keyboard, controller, or synthesiser without a separate USB MIDI adapter is a convenience that matters in a working studio. The four outputs open up A/B monitor switching between two pairs of speakers, or allow send/return routing to hardware compressors and effects units.
Build quality is identical to the rest of the range — solid aluminium chassis, USB-C bus-powered, and compact enough for a desktop without taking up excessive space. The remote-controlled preamps can be adjusted via Focusrite Control 2 software rather than only at the hardware level, which suits rack or out-of-reach placements.
The 4i4 used market is smaller than the 2i2 but still active. It retains value better than the smaller models given the more specialised feature set.
Who Is This For?

- Studios with outboard gear requiring balanced line returns
- Anyone running dual monitor setups needing A/B switching
- Home studios that have outgrown the 2i2's I/O and need more routing flexibility
