The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is the world's best-selling audio interface. With over six million units sold across four generations, it has become the default starting point for home recording — and for good reason. The 4th generation, released in 2023, is the most capable version yet.
The core format is unchanged: two combo inputs (XLR and 1/4" jack on each), two balanced line outputs, one headphone output, and USB-C connectivity. What changed in Gen 4 is the quality underneath. Focusrite fitted the same Cirrus Logic converters used in their RedNet studio rack gear, raising the dynamic range to 120dB on the line outputs. The preamp gain range extends to 69dB — a significant improvement over the Gen 3's 56dB, and useful for recording dynamic microphones or quiet sources without bringing in noise. Both inputs carry independent 48V phantom power and individual Air mode switching, which the Gen 3 lacked.
The 2i2 sits in a useful middle ground. It can record two sources simultaneously — a vocalist and a guitarist, two microphones on a drum kit, or a stereo synth — which the Solo cannot. It does not have MIDI or additional line inputs, which is where the 4i4 takes over. For the majority of home recording situations it is the natural choice.
In use the preamps are clean and quiet. There is no colouration at sensible gain settings, and the instrument inputs handle both passive and active sources well. The headphone output is adequately loud for tracking. Focusrite Control 2 software gives basic routing and mix control on desktop.
The 3rd generation (2019) is the most commonly traded used model given its longer time in market. The 4th gen is increasingly available used. The used market is liquid — there is always supply, and pricing is predictable.
