The Shure SM58 is a cardioid dynamic vocal microphone that has been in continuous production since 1966. It is the most widely used vocal microphone in live performance history — standard issue on stages from small venues to stadium tours worldwide, and a reliable studio vocal mic in its own right. At £115 new, it is the reference point against which most vocal microphones are measured.
Who Is This For?
The SM58 is for vocalists, presenters, and anyone who needs a reliable, road-proven microphone for live or studio vocal use. Its built-in spherical pop filter reduces plosives, the cardioid pattern rejects off-axis noise from monitors and stage sound, and its pneumatic shock-mount minimises handling noise from handheld use. It is robust enough to survive years of touring without maintenance.
Sound Character
The SM58's frequency response is tailored for vocal use — a presence peak in the upper midrange adds clarity and cut through a mix, while a bass roll-off below 100Hz reduces proximity effect when working the mic close. The result is a warm but clear vocal sound that sits forward in a dense stage mix. It is not the most flattering microphone for intimate studio recording, but its reliability and consistency make it the standard for live work.
Build and Reliability
The SM58 uses a die-cast metal body with a dark grey enamel finish and a silver spherical steel mesh grille. The same pneumatic shock-mount cartridge design used since the 1960s means the SM58 is effectively indestructible under normal use — drops, moisture, and temperature extremes that would destroy lesser microphones are routine for SM58s on tour. The replacement cartridge (R59) is widely available for servicing.
SM58 vs SM57
The SM58 and SM57 share the same capsule. The SM58's spherical grille integrates a pop filter that softens plosives and breath noise for vocal use. The SM57's lower-profile head is better suited to close instrument miking. Some engineers reach for the SM57 on vocals when they want a brighter, more unfiltered character.
