The Shure SM7dB is the 2023 evolution of the legendary SM7B, adding a built-in preamp that solves the one complaint users have had for decades: the SM7B needs too much gain. The SM7dB uses the same proven dynamic capsule and delivers the same warm, smooth vocal tone, but with selectable +18dB or +28dB of clean gain built right into the microphone body. No more Cloudlifters, no more maxing out your interface preamp.
Same Capsule, Same Sound
The SM7dB shares its dynamic cardioid capsule with the SM7B, delivering the same flat, wide-range frequency response from 50Hz to 20kHz that has made the SM7B an industry standard. The same bass rolloff and presence boost switches are on board, letting you tailor the low-end and mid-range response. With the preamp bypassed, the SM7dB behaves identically to an SM7B — same sensitivity (-59dBV/Pa), same 150-ohm impedance, same sound.
Built-In Preamp
The headline feature is the Shure-designed preamp (developed with technology licensed from Cloud Microphones). A three-position switch on the rear selects between bypass (standard SM7B operation), +18dB, or +28dB of clean gain. In +18dB mode, sensitivity jumps to -41dBV/Pa. In +28dB mode, it reaches -31dBV/Pa — enough for any interface on the market to drive it comfortably with headroom to spare. The preamp requires 48V phantom power to operate, but in bypass mode the mic works without it, just like a standard SM7B.
Build and Design
The SM7dB is virtually identical in appearance to the SM7B — same dark grey housing, same yoke mount, same detachable windscreens. It's marginally heavier at 837g versus the SM7B's 764g, accounting for the added preamp circuitry. The air suspension shock isolation system and integrated pop filter carry over unchanged. The electromagnetic humbucking shielding is retained, keeping interference from screens and other electronics at bay.
Who Is This For?
- Podcasters and streamers who want SM7B sound without needing a Cloudlifter or expensive interface
- Home studio vocalists using bus-powered or budget audio interfaces
- Broadcasters who want a plug-and-play solution with no external gain boosters
- Existing SM7B users who are tired of their gain chain and want a simpler setup
The SM7dB costs more than the SM7B, but when you factor in the price of a Cloudlifter CL-1 (around £130-150), the difference shrinks considerably. If you are buying new and know you will need the extra gain, the SM7dB is the more elegant solution. If you already own an SM7B and a good preamp, there is no sonic reason to switch.
