Surge XT

Surge XT proves open source can compete with commercial giants. Originally developed by Vember Audio as a closed-source synth, it was open-sourced in 2018 and has since been rebuilt by a dedicated community into one of the most capable free synthesizers available.

Synthesis Depth

Three oscillators each support 12 different algorithms: classic virtual analog, wavetable, FM2, FM3, sine, string, twist, alias, and more. This breadth means Surge XT covers territory that would require multiple commercial plugins — from warm analog pads to aggressive FM basses to evolving wavetable textures.

Filters

Two filters run in eight different routing configurations including serial, parallel, and feedback loops. Over 20 filter types cover analogue ladder models, digital SVF, comb, vintage emulations (K35, Diode Ladder from Odin 2, OB-Xd multimode), and creative options like cutoff warp and tri-pole. The filter section alone rivals dedicated filter plugins.

Effects and Modulation

Sixteen effect slots provide comprehensive processing without leaving the synth. The modulation system is deeply flexible — LFOs, envelopes, step sequencers, and formulaic modulators can target any parameter. The macro system exposes key controls for quick preset tweaking.

Platform Support

Available on Windows, macOS, and Linux as VST3, AU, CLAP, and standalone. CLAP support enables per-voice modulation in compatible hosts. MPE support makes it responsive to expressive controllers. The open-source model means community members contribute fixes, features, and presets continuously.
