The Access Virus TI2 Desktop is a hardware virtual analog synthesizer released in 2009. This page covers the Desktop (rackmount/tabletop) version. The TI2 was also available as the TI2 Keyboard (61-key semi-weighted) at a higher price point.
The TI2 is a refresh of the Virus TI with 25% faster DSP chips for more polyphony, a third USB audio output, and updated cosmetics. The sound engine, OS, and feature set are shared with the TI — the TI2 simply handles more complex patches before running out of voices.
Sound Engine
The oscillator section offers three oscillators per voice with multiple synthesis types: virtual analog (classic waveforms), wavetable (63 tables plus sine), HyperSaw (up to 9 parallel saws per oscillator for massive unison sounds), graintable, and formant table. Two independent multimode filters provide low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-stop modes, plus a Moog ladder filter model with 6-24 dB slope. The combination of synthesis types and filter options gives the Virus its range — from aggressive leads to lush pads to acid bass.
Effects and Modulation
192 effects run simultaneously across all parts: reverb, delay, chorus, phaser, frequency shifter, ring modulator, distortion, 3-band EQ, and character processors. A 6-slot modulation matrix connects 3 LFOs (68 waveforms each), 2 ADSTR envelopes, and various controllers to any destination. The 32-step programmable arpeggiator runs independently per part.
Total Integration
The TI2 connects to your DAW via USB as both an audio and MIDI interface — audio streams directly into your session with sample-accurate timing and delay compensation. The TI2 provides 3 USB audio outputs (up from 2 on the TI). The hardware also has 6 balanced analog outputs at +4 dB, 192 kHz D/A converters, and S/PDIF digital I/O. Memory holds 512 RAM patches and 3,328 ROM patches across 26 banks.
Note: the Virus Control plugin has compatibility issues with modern operating systems. Third-party solutions exist, but many users now treat the TI2 as a standalone instrument rather than relying on the integration features.
Who Is This For?
- Electronic producers wanting the classic Virus sound in hardware
- Live performers with hands-on control via 32 knobs and 43 buttons
- Trance, house, and EDM producers — the Virus defined these genres
- Studio owners needing a multitimbral synth with professional I/O
- Used market buyers — discontinued but widely available secondhand
The DSP chips are no longer manufactured, making repairs difficult if the DSP fails. Factor this into used purchases.
