The Arturia DrumBrute Impact arrived in 2019 as a leaner, more affordable sibling to the original DrumBrute — and it quickly earned a reputation as one of the best-value analog drum machines on the market. Where its predecessor offered 17 instruments and a more elaborate feature set, the Impact strips things back to 10 focused voices and puts the emphasis on immediacy, punch, and live playability.
All ten sounds are fully analog, and each has been designed with a specific sonic character in mind. The kick hits hard and sits low, the two snares cover different ends of the spectrum (one bodied and snappy, the other trashy and clap-like), and the FM Drum adds a wildcard percussive synth voice with carrier pitch, FM amount, and mod pitch controls. The hats are tight and aggressive, with the closed hat influencing the open hat in a way that mirrors the circuit interaction of classic Roland machines.
The standout feature that sets the Impact apart from its competitors is Color — a per-instrument parameter that adds a second layer of sonic variation to every voice except the cowbell. For the kick it adds drive, for the cymbal it shifts the tone, and for the FM Drum it pushes the pitch envelope. Color can be automated and recorded via the step sequencer, making it a genuine performance tool rather than a set-and-forget tweak.
The sequencer draws its DNA from the BeatStep Pro, refined through the original DrumBrute. Each of the 10 instrument tracks runs up to 64 steps, and crucially, each track can have an independent length — enabling true polyrhythm without any workarounds. Swing and randomness can be applied globally or per instrument. Step Repeat lets you subdivide individual steps into 2, 3, or 4 sub-hits for fill-building without changing the overall resolution. There are 64 patterns available, and a Song mode chains them for full arrangement control.
Connectivity is solid for the price point: individual 3.5mm outputs for the kick, snares, hats, and FM drum let you route sounds independently to a mixer or interface, while the main stereo output handles everything else. MIDI in and out, USB, and a clock sync port with multiple standards (1PPS, 2PPQ, DIN24, DIN48) make it easy to integrate into any studio or live rig.
Who Is This For?
The DrumBrute Impact is for electronic and techno producers who want a self-contained analog drum machine at an accessible price. It rewards hands-on performers — the eight velocity-sensitive pads, per-instrument color and swing controls, and real-time randomness make it genuinely expressive to play live. If you need more voices or sampling capability the Impact will feel limited, but as a focused, punchy analog rhythm machine it punches well above its price on the used market.
