The Arturia BeatStep Pro combines pad controller functionality with three independent step sequencers, bridging DAW control and hardware sequencing in a compact, affordable package. Its comprehensive CV/Gate connectivity makes it particularly useful for modular integration.
Sequencer Architecture
Two independent melodic sequencers offer up to 64 steps each with pitch, velocity, and gate per step. The 16-track drum sequencer provides another 64 steps. All three sequencers run simultaneously with independent tempos, lengths, and directions possible—enabling polyrhythmic compositions from a single device.
Sixteen projects store 16 sequences per sequencer, yielding over 4,000 possible pattern combinations per project. Swing, probability, and randomisation features add variation to sequences.
Pad Controller
The 16 velocity and pressure-sensitive pads work for real-time performance, step programming, and external software control. The touch strip functions as a ribbon controller, looper/roller, or modulation source.
CV/Gate Connectivity
Each melodic sequencer provides pitch CV (1V/octave), velocity CV, and gate outputs—enough to fully control two modular voices simultaneously. Eight drum gate outputs (10V) trigger modular percussion directly. This extensive CV implementation makes the BeatStep Pro unusually capable for Eurorack integration at its price point.
MIDI and Sync
MIDI input and output via included breakout cables connect to traditional hardware. USB provides computer connectivity. Clock input and output support multiple sync standards for integration with various gear generations.
Software Integration
Arturia's MIDI Control Center software allows deep customisation of pad assignments, CV calibration, and sequencer behaviour. Firmware updates have added features since launch.
Who Is This For?
The BeatStep Pro suits musicians wanting affordable hardware sequencing with serious CV connectivity. Modular users appreciate the eight drum gates and dual melodic CV outputs. Those building dawless setups find it capable as a central sequencer at a fraction of competitors' costs. It works equally well as a DAW controller with sequencing capabilities or a fully standalone hardware brain.
Legacy
The BeatStep Pro democratised hardware sequencing with CV connectivity. It proved sophisticated sequencing didn't require boutique pricing, influencing how the market valued entry-level hardware. Many musicians started their hardware journey with a BeatStep Pro before expanding to more complex setups.
