The Teenage Engineering OP-XY is a sequencer, synthesizer, and sampler built around a 16-track, 64-step sequencer with serious depth. Where earlier TE instruments prioritised portability and simplicity, the OP-XY is a more ambitious workstation — eight synthesis engines, three sampler types, and a sequencer with 14 unique step components give it a creative range that goes well beyond what the form factor suggests.
The keyboard is 68 ultra-low-profile mechanical buttons spanning two octaves, with pressure-sensitive pitch bend. The high-resolution IPS display at 480×222px drives a grayscale interface with red used only for recording and parameter locks — characteristically TE in its visual restraint. Four multipurpose encoders handle parameter editing across engines.
Synthesis covers a wide range: eight distinct engines alongside a drum sampler, multisampler, and synth sampler give you the tools to build complete arrangements from scratch. Effects include reverb, delay, chorus, distortion, lo-fi, and phaser. The sequencer runs at 1920 PPQN resolution with nine patterns per track and up to 64 bars per pattern.
Connectivity is built around 3.5mm — stereo line in and out, MIDI in, and a multi-out that carries CV, MIDI, sync, and aux audio. USB-C handles MIDI host and device. Bluetooth LE MIDI is also on board. A built-in microphone and speaker, six-axis accelerometer, and 16-hour battery complete a machine that is genuinely self-contained.
Who Is This For?
The OP-XY is for producers who want a deep, portable workstation that does not compromise on sequencing capability. It rewards time investment — the step component system and multi-engine architecture have real depth — but the TE interface philosophy keeps it tactile and performance-friendly. On the used market it is still relatively new, so prices are close to retail, but it is a capable instrument that will hold its value well as TE discontinues and moves on.
