The Squarp Pyramid is a dedicated hardware sequencer offering 64 polyphonic tracks, Euclidean pattern generation, and comprehensive MIDI/CV connectivity. Made by French company Squarp Instruments, it focuses entirely on sequencing without built-in sounds.
Design Philosophy
The Pyramid exists to be the brain of a hardware setup. It doesn't generate audio—instead, it provides the most capable hardware sequencing possible for controlling external synthesizers, drum machines, and modular systems. This singular focus allows depth that multi-function devices rarely achieve.
Track Structure
Sixty-four polyphonic tracks are organised across four banks of sixteen. Each track can hold up to 32 patterns with independent lengths, time signatures, and playback settings. The fully polyrhythmic architecture means tracks can run at different tempos and time signatures simultaneously, creating complex interlocking grooves.
Sequencing Approaches
The Pyramid supports multiple sequencing workflows. Traditional step sequencing and real-time recording cover conventional approaches. Euclidean sequencing—one algorithmic engine per track—generates mathematically distributed rhythms that create complex patterns automatically. This makes the Pyramid both a composition tool and a generative instrument.
MIDI Effects
Real-time MIDI effects include quantisation, arpeggiators, harmonisers, swing, LFOs, and randomisers. These process sequences non-destructively, meaning the original data remains intact while effects modify the output. Effects can be stacked and automated.
Connectivity
Two MIDI DIN outputs and USB MIDI handle traditional gear. CV, Gate, and envelope outputs connect to modular systems. Four CV inputs accept external modulation sources. DIN Sync output enables synchronisation with vintage Roland equipment. This comprehensive connectivity makes the Pyramid suitable for hybrid setups spanning multiple decades of gear.
Interface
The backlit LCD and touchpad provide visual feedback and gestural control. Thirty-five backlit silicon pads and five assignable encoders offer hands-on pattern manipulation. The interface emphasises immediate access over menu-diving.
Who Is This For?
The Pyramid suits musicians running dawless hardware setups who need sophisticated sequencing beyond what individual instruments provide. It appeals to those working with both modern MIDI gear and vintage/modular equipment. The Euclidean features attract producers interested in generative composition. For computer-averse musicians, it provides sequencing power approaching DAW capability in standalone hardware form.
Legacy
The Pyramid established Squarp Instruments as a serious sequencer manufacturer and proved demand existed for dedicated sequencing hardware. Its success led to the Hapax. Though now discontinued (listed as "legacy" on Squarp's website), the Pyramid retains a dedicated user base and remains sought after on the used market.
