Squarp Hapax

The Squarp Hapax is a polychronic hardware sequencer released in 2022, featuring dual-project architecture, 128 RGB pads, and comprehensive MIDI/CV connectivity. Built around dual ARM processors, it represents Squarp's flagship sequencer design following the success of the Pyramid.

Polychronic Architecture

The Hapax's defining feature is simultaneous operation of two independent projects. Each project contains 16 tracks with 16 patterns per track. Projects maintain completely separate tempo, time signature, and sequence data. This enables seamless live transitions between songs, A/B arrangement comparison, or effectively doubling available tracks. Loading a new project happens transparently while the current project continues playing—essential for extended live performances.

Interface

The 128 RGB matrix pads provide visual feedback and direct interaction for note entry, pattern launching, and performance control. Dual grayscale OLED screens display detailed information without requiring menu navigation. Nine clickable encoders (eight assignable) and 52 click buttons complete the hands-on interface—a significant departure from the Pyramid's touchpad approach. An isomorphic keyboard mode with chord generator expands melodic input options.

Capacity and Resolution

Recording resolution of 192 PPQN captures subtle timing nuances. The dual-processor architecture handles up to one million notes and events, allowing complex arrangements without performance issues. Track lengths range from single steps to 32 bars with polyrhythmic capability. Each track supports independent BPM settings for polymetric compositions.

MIDI Implementation

Four independent MIDI outputs (A, B, C, D) can address different gear simultaneously—useful for setups with multiple instruments requiring dedicated channels. Two MIDI inputs accept external control data. USB functions as both device (connection to computer) and host (direct controller connection without computer). This totals 96 MIDI output channels across all ports.

CV/Gate Integration

Eight 16-bit CV and gate outputs (four pairs) connect to modular systems with high precision. Two CV inputs accept external modulation with configurable voltage ranges. This extensive modular connectivity makes the Hapax suitable for hybrid setups combining MIDI instruments with Eurorack.

MIDI Effects and Performance

Eight real-time, polyphonic, non-destructive MIDI effects per track include arpeggiation, harmonisation, swing, randomisation, and LFOs. Effects can be applied per-track and automated. Song mode enables pattern chaining for complete arrangements. Full undo/redo with history and snapshot functionality allows non-destructive experimentation. Algorithmic tools provide generative sequencing options.
