Arturia Pigments 7 represents Arturia's vision for modern software synthesis. With a reactive UI, visual modulation feedback, and seven synthesis engines under one roof, it has grown into one of the most versatile soft synths available — and MusicRadar noted it's "becoming so powerful it risks making the V Collection look obsolete."
Synthesis Engines
Seven engines provide the sound sources: virtual analog, wavetable, granular, sample playback, harmonic (additive), FM, and the Modal engine (physical modelling, added in v6). Two engine slots run simultaneously for layering any combination. The wavetable engine includes editing tools and custom import, the granular engine processes samples into evolving textures, and the Modal engine generates acoustic-style tones from resonant physical models — strings, bars, tubes, and membranes.
Filters and Effects
Three filter slots draw from a wide range of types including the new v7 additions: Rage (feedback-fueled distortion), Ripple (phase-based motion), and Reverb (timbre-thickening space for bass design). The effects section includes the new Corroder (modulation-driven grit) alongside reverbs, delays, chorus, compression, and more. Pigments 7 also brought a 15-20% CPU reduction on heavy patches thanks to vectorized filter code.
Modulation and Sequencing
The modulation system is Pigments' standout feature. Drag-and-drop routing with visual feedback shows mod source influence on every parameter — modulation depth rings now display actual voltage range rather than percentages. Function generators, LFOs, envelopes, and random sources can target anything. The polyrhythmic sequencer goes beyond arpegiation with per-step modulation, creating evolving patterns where parameters change independently from notes.
Who Is This For?
- Sound designers exploring multiple synthesis types in one interface
- Producers wanting visual, intuitive modulation routing
- Electronic musicians creating evolving, generative patches
- Bass designers using the new Rage filter and Corroder effect
- Arturia users wanting a modern complement to V Collection
For focused wavetable work, Serum goes deeper. For synthesis variety with a modern visual workflow, Pigments offers unmatched breadth.
