The Clavia Nord Lead 2 is the synth that cemented virtual analog as a serious category. Released in 1999 as the successor to the groundbreaking original Nord Lead, it doubled the polyphony to 16 voices, added new waveforms and modulation options, and kept the iconic red panel with its knob-per-function layout. It remains one of the most sought-after VA synths on the used market, prized for its immediate playability and a sound that sits effortlessly in any mix.
Sound and Synthesis
The Nord Lead 2 gives you two oscillators per voice with sine, triangle, sawtooth, and pulse waveforms (with adjustable pulse width). Oscillator 2 adds variable noise and can hard-sync to or frequency-modulate Oscillator 1, opening up aggressive timbres well beyond basic subtractive territory. A ring modulator was added over the original, along with the ability to sync Oscillator 1 with the noise generator for unique textures. The filter section offers 12dB and 24dB low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass modes with resonance that pushes into self-oscillation, plus a new filter distortion option that gives it real bite.
Interface and Performance
Like its predecessor, the Nord Lead 2's greatest asset is its hands-on interface — virtually every parameter has a dedicated knob or button. It is 4-part multitimbral with four individual audio outputs, so you can layer or split sounds and route them separately. The arpeggiator gained additional patterns over the original, and two LFOs per voice provide extensive modulation. The signature pitch stick and mod wheel remain, making it a natural performer.
Nord Lead 2 vs 2X
Clavia released the Nord Lead 2X in 2003 as a refresh — it bumped polyphony to 20 voices, upgraded to 24-bit/96kHz DACs (versus the original's 18-bit), and expanded the onboard patch memory. The 2X dropped the PCMCIA card slot. Sonically, the 2X is cleaner with less aliasing, which some players prefer and others find lacks the slightly gritty character of the original Nord Lead 2. Both share the same synthesis engine.
Who Is This For?
- Live performers who need instant hands-on control with no menu diving
- Electronic producers after a warm, characterful virtual analog with real presence in a mix
- Synth enthusiasts looking for a 90s VA classic at a reasonable used price
- Sound designers who appreciate the raw, slightly aggressive tone of early DSP synthesis
The Nord Lead 2 hits the sweet spot in the Nord Lead lineup — more capable than the original, more characterful than the 2X, and widely available on the used market.
