The Elektron Syntakt is a 12-track drum computer and synthesizer combining three analog drum voices, one analog cymbal voice, and eight digital synthesis engines. A dedicated FX track and 12 MIDI tracks round out the feature set. Over 40 machines — Elektron's term for synthesis algorithms — can be loaded onto any compatible track.
Hybrid Architecture
The four analog tracks use genuine analog circuitry. Three drum tracks offer 19 machine types including seven bass drum variants, five snares, rimshots, tonal synths, and noise. The cymbal track covers 13 machines: hi-hats, cymbals, cowbells, and impulse sources. Each analog track has its own overdrive and multimode filter.
Eight digital tracks access a broad synthesis palette — FM, wavetable, subtractive, and sample playback via the Twinshot machine. Each digital track has a digital overdrive, a multimode filter, and a base-width filter for stereo sculpting. Despite the drum computer framing, several digital machines are well suited to bass lines, leads, and pads.
Sequencer
Elektron's 64-step sequencer supports per-step parameter locks, conditional triggers with trig chance, micro-timing offsets, and a per-track Euclidean sequence generator. Individual pattern length and time scale multiplier per track allow polyrhythmic structures. Song Mode allows full compositions to be built and performed.
Effects
A dedicated FX track handles global processing — delay and reverb with automation, analog stereo overdrive, and an analog stereo multimode filter. Two assignable LFOs on the FX track allow deep modulation of the send effects. External audio fed through the inputs can also be processed by this chain.
Performance
Four track modifiers — retrig, velocity, and two assignable types — allow fast parameter manipulation during performance. Keyboard mode with 36 scale options enables melodic playing. Each MIDI machine offers four-note polyphony per step and eight assignable CC controls.
Who Is This For?
The Syntakt suits electronic musicians wanting drum machine capability with real synthesis depth. Its hybrid architecture appeals to those who value analog character without committing to a pure analog box. The Elektron workflow — parameter locks, conditional triggers, Song Mode — is particularly compelling for live performers who want evolving, non-repetitive patterns. Melodic machines make it viable as a complete groovebox rather than just a percussion tool.
