The Moog Minimoog Voyager XL is the flagship version of Dr. Robert Moog's landmark monophonic synthesizer, introduced in 2010 to mark the 40th anniversary of the original Minimoog Model D. Where the standard Voyager has 44 keys, the XL expands to a 61-note keyboard and adds a ribbon controller and an extensive CV/Gate patch bay — making it one of the most expressive and connectable analog monosynths ever produced. It was discontinued around 2014 and commands a premium on the used market.
Who Is This For?
The Voyager XL suits professional keyboardists and sound designers who want the definitive Moog monophonic experience. The five-octave keyboard gives pianists the range they expect, the ribbon controller adds a continuous expressive dimension, and the expanded patch bay opens up deep modular integration. It has appeared in the rigs of Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, Bjork, and the Crystal Method. On the used market it is one of the most capable and stage-proven mono synths available.
Oscillators and Filter
Three wide-range analog VCOs cover triangle, sawtooth, square, and narrow rectangular waveforms — the same oscillator complement as the original Minimoog. Two analog filters operate in dual lowpass or lowpass/highpass configuration, both running the classic Moog ladder topology at 24 dB/oct with resonance capable of self-oscillation. The dual-filter arrangement enables tonal shaping unavailable on the Model D, from deep stacked low-pass warmth to a high-pass/low-pass band-pass hybrid.
XYZ Touch Surface and Ribbon Controller
The Voyager XL retains the three-dimensional XYZ touch surface from the standard Voyager — generating independent control signals from left-right position, up-down position, and finger pressure — and adds a ribbon controller for additional pitch and modulation expression. Together these give the XL a level of physical expressivity matched by very few analog synthesizers.
Expanded Patch Bay
The XL's most significant addition over the standard Voyager is an extensive front-panel patch bay with CV/Gate inputs and outputs covering pitch, filter cutoff, volume, pan, modulation, envelope, LFO, and the touch surface outputs. This makes the XL a natural centrepiece for a modular or hybrid studio setup. VCO3 can function as a secondary LFO when detuned below audio range, extending the modulation options further.
Memory and MIDI
128 presets are stored in nonvolatile memory with full MIDI In/Out/Through. All front panel controls are stored per patch, including touch surface assignments.
Other Voyager Variants
The Voyager was produced in several versions between 2002 and 2014, all sharing the same core three-oscillator, dual-filter architecture:
Performer — The standard model with 44-key keyboard and hardwood cabinet. The most common on the used market and the best entry point into the Voyager range.
Signature Edition — Hand-finished wood, illuminated acrylic wheels, and a gold nameplate individually signed by Bob Moog. Came with a padded gig bag.
Electric Blue — Electroluminescent blue backlit panel and fractal blue ash cabinet. Sonically identical to the Performer but visually distinctive.
Select Series — Customisable wood finish and backlight colour combinations produced between 2006 and 2013.
Old School — Stripped-back version with no preset memory and a traditional 1970s aesthetic. Designed for players who wanted a purer analog feel closer to the original Minimoog workflow.
Rack Mount Edition (RME) — 19" 5U rack format introduced in 2005. Up to 16 units can be linked for polyphony, suited to studio installations where keyboard control is handled externally.
All variants are now discontinued. The Performer is the most affordable on the used market; the XL, Signature, and Electric Blue command premiums.
