Spectrasonics Omnisphere is the flagship software synthesizer used across film scoring, pop production, and electronic music. First released in 2008 and continuously expanded, it combines sampling, synthesis, and granular processing in one massive instrument that many producers reach for first.
The Sound Library
The core library spans over 64GB of meticulously recorded and designed sounds — around 14,000 patches in the current version. Categories cover classic synth emulations, acoustic instruments, textural atmospheres, cinematic soundscapes, basses, leads, keys, and pads. Spectrasonics captures sources using high-end signal chains, then processes them through the synthesis engine. Many producers use Omnisphere as their primary go-to when a track needs pads, atmospheres, or cinematic texture.
Synthesis Engine
Beyond sample playback, Omnisphere offers wavetable synthesis with hundreds of DSP waveforms, granular manipulation of any loaded sound, FM synthesis, and ring modulation. The Orb interface provides real-time sound morphing by moving through a two-dimensional parameter space. Two layers per patch allow complex combinations with independent oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, and effects per layer. The modulation system connects any source to any destination with visual feedback.
Hardware Synth Integration
Hardware Synth Integration lets you control Omnisphere from over 65 supported hardware synthesizers. Connect a MicroKorg, Prophet, Minilogue, or Bass Station via USB or MIDI and the hardware becomes a dedicated controller — its knobs and keys map directly to Omnisphere parameters with custom profiles per synth. This bridges the gap between software depth and hardware tactile control.
Who Is This For?
Omnisphere suits producers who need comprehensive sound coverage:
- Film and TV composers needing instant cinematic sounds and atmospheres
- Pop, R&B, and gospel producers using Omnisphere's signature pads and keys
- Hardware synth owners wanting to extend their instruments into software
- Sound designers layering samples with granular and wavetable synthesis
- Producers wanting a single instrument covering multiple genres without menu-diving
For focused wavetable work, Serum is more specialized. For breadth of sounds and instant inspiration across genres, Omnisphere is unmatched.
