The ARP 2600 is one of the most legendary semi-modular analog synthesizers ever made. Originally produced by ARP Instruments from 1971 to 1981, it became a cornerstone of electronic music, sound design, and film scoring. Unlike fully modular systems, the ARP 2600 comes pre-wired with a default signal path, so you can start making sounds immediately while still having the freedom to repatch using its built-in patch panel.
Sound Architecture
The ARP 2600 features three voltage-controlled oscillators, each with different waveform options. VCO 1 offers sawtooth and square waves, VCO 2 adds triangle, pulse, and sine to the mix, and VCO 3 provides sawtooth, square, and pulse. This variety gives you a broad tonal palette before you even touch the filter. The 24dB/octave low-pass filter is a key part of the 2600's character — early models used ARP's clone of the Moog transistor ladder filter (the 4012), while later models switched to the ARP-designed 4072 filter after a patent dispute.
Beyond the oscillators and filter, the 2600 packs in a ring modulator, sample-and-hold, noise generator (white and pink), spring reverb, envelope follower, and two envelope generators. There is also an onboard microphone preamp and external audio input, making it a powerful tool for processing external sounds through its filter and effects chain.
Patching and Workflow
The semi-modular design means every module is internally connected via a normalized signal path, but the patch panel with sliders and 1/4-inch jacks lets you override any connection. This makes the 2600 more approachable than a fully modular system while retaining deep sound design flexibility. The companion 3620 duophonic keyboard adds pitch and gate control, with later versions supporting two-note duophonic playing.
Who Is This For?
- Sound designers and film composers — the 2600 created the voice of R2-D2 and countless sci-fi effects
- Experimental musicians who want hands-on semi-modular synthesis without a fully modular commitment
- Vintage synth collectors seeking one of the holy grail instruments of analog synthesis
- Electronic producers who want thick, characterful analog tones with extensive modulation options
Original ARP 2600s are rare and expensive. Korg released the ARP 2600 FS (full-size reissue) and the more compact ARP 2600 M, both faithful recreations with modern reliability. These reissues offer the same sound and patching experience at a more accessible price point.
