Focusrite Scarlett 8i6

The Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 is the point in the Scarlett range where the interface becomes a proper studio hub rather than a simple recording tool. Where the 4i4 offers four inputs and one headphone output, the 8i6 adds two more line inputs, a second independent headphone output, and S/PDIF digital I/O — the additions that matter most for producers running multiple hardware sources or recording in a two-person setup.

The interface currently ships as the 3rd generation — Focusrite has not released a 4th gen 8i6, making this the only model in the Scarlett range still on its previous iteration. The preamps are the 3rd gen design with Air mode, the same circuit as found on the 2019 4i4. They are clean and competent, with enough gain for condenser and dynamic microphones. The four rear line inputs accept synthesisers, drum machines, and hardware effects at standard professional line level.

The dual headphone outputs are the practical reason most users step up from the 4i4. Both run independently with separate level controls — useful for tracking sessions where the artist and engineer need different mixes, or for studios running a dedicated headphone amp on one output. The S/PDIF digital in and out add two additional channels of digital audio for connecting an external converter, digital effect unit, or second interface.

One important difference from the rest of the current Scarlett range: the 8i6 is not bus-powered. It requires an external 12V DC power supply, which is included. This makes it less portable than the 4i4 but not a meaningful limitation for a desk-based setup.

Driver stability on Windows has been a noted issue for some users — particularly audio stuttering under heavy system load. This is a known 3rd gen characteristic and Focusrite has addressed it in driver updates, but it is worth being aware of for Windows users.

Who Is This For?

  • Home studios recording multiple hardware sources simultaneously who have outgrown the 4i4
  • Producers who need two independent headphone mixes for tracking sessions
  • Studios connecting digital outboard gear via S/PDIF
  • Anyone who needs more line inputs than the 4i4 provides without moving to a rack-mount interface
