The Universal Audio Apollo 8 is a discontinued rackmount Thunderbolt 2 interface that remains one of the most traded UA units on the used market. Originally released in 2015 and replaced by the current Apollo x8, the Apollo 8 established the 18-in/24-out rackmount format with four Unison preamps and UAD DSP processing that made the Apollo range the professional studio standard.
The Apollo 8 shipped in DUO and QUAD Core configurations — the DUO is the most commonly found used and handles moderate UAD plugin loads well; the QUAD provides significantly more headroom for larger sessions with many simultaneous plugin instances. Both use Thunderbolt 2, which means a Thunderbolt 2 port or a Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter is required. Modern Thunderbolt 3/4 Macs work with Apple's official adapter; Windows Thunderbolt 3 machines work with the correct OWC or Sonnet adapter.
The four Unison preamps are the same core technology as found in current Apollo hardware — hardware-integrated emulations of vintage preamps that interact with the physical gain controls in the way the original circuits would. Eight channels of ADAT optical expansion bring the total input count to 18, making it capable of full band tracking with an external preamp bank. The 24-output count gives enough routing flexibility for multi-room monitoring, multiple headphone mixes, and outboard effects patching.
The main reason to buy an Apollo 8 used rather than a current x8 is price. Used DUO examples trade at a significant discount to new x8 pricing, and the audio quality difference between generations is marginal in most studio contexts. The Thunderbolt 2 requirement is the practical constraint to evaluate before buying.
