The Korg Monologue is a compact monophonic analog synthesizer developed in collaboration with Richard D. James (Aphex Twin). Released in 2017, it combines dual oscillators, a 16-step sequencer with motion recording, and battery operation in an affordable, portable package.
Design Philosophy
The Monologue distils analog synthesis essentials into a travel-friendly format. Aphex Twin's involvement influenced the microtuning implementation and overall sound design—unusual for a budget synthesizer. Despite its low price, it offers genuine analog circuitry rather than digital emulation.
Sound Engine
Two voltage-controlled oscillators offer multiple waveforms: VCO1 provides saw, triangle, and square with waveshaping. VCO2 adds noise and ring modulation options plus hard sync to VCO1. This dual-oscillator design enables sounds from simple basses to complex textures.
The 2-pole lowpass filter provides resonance capable of self-oscillation. While simpler than the Minilogue's filter, it delivers aggressive character suited to the Monologue's mono architecture.
Sequencer and Motion
The 16-step sequencer supports both real-time and step recording with rest, tie, and slide functions. Motion sequence records up to four simultaneous knob movements per pattern—filter sweeps, pitch changes, or any accessible parameter—creating animated, evolving sequences without external automation.
Microtuning
The built-in microtuning editor, influenced by Aphex Twin's interest in alternative scales, allows creation and storage of custom tunings beyond standard 12-tone equal temperament. Twelve user slots complement the factory microtuning presets. The Monologue supports MIDI Tuning Standard for external scale data.
OLED Display
The oscilloscope display shows waveforms in real-time during sound design—educational and visually engaging. It also displays parameter values and program information clearly.
Portability
Battery operation (six AA cells) provides genuine portability. Combined with its 1.7kg weight and compact dimensions, the Monologue works for sketching ideas anywhere. Connectivity includes MIDI In/Out, USB MIDI, and Audio Sync for syncing with Korg volcas, electribes, and other gear. Available in Silver, Black, Red, Dark Blue, and Gold finishes.
Who Is This For?
The Monologue suits beginners wanting genuine analog synthesis at an accessible price. Experienced synthesists appreciate it as a portable sketchpad or dedicated bass/lead voice. The microtuning appeals to experimentalists exploring alternative scales. Its compact size and battery power make it ideal for travelling musicians and those with limited space.
Legacy
The Monologue proved affordable analog synthesizers could include genuinely interesting features like microtuning and motion sequencing. Its success contributed to the analog revival and demonstrated that budget constraints don't require creative compromise.
