Roland D-50

The Roland D-50 arrived in 1987 as Roland's first fully digital synthesizer, and it did something no instrument had managed convincingly before: it made digital synthesis sound organic. Its Linear Arithmetic (LA) synthesis engine — developed by Tadao Kikumoto, the same engineer behind the TR-808 and TR-909 — combined short PCM attack transients with digitally generated sustained tones, giving sounds a natural front end that FM synthesis could not replicate. Within a year it had displaced the Yamaha DX7 as the studio standard.

LA Synthesis

Each patch is built from up to 32 partials organised into tones (two partials per tone), then into patches (up to two tones per patch). Any partial can draw from either a PCM sample or a synthesised waveform — or both layered together. The 100 onboard PCM waveforms include 47 attack transients: short recordings of real instruments that give a sound its initial character before the synth portion takes over.

The presets designed by Eric Persing and Adrian Scott defined the instrument's character. "Fantasia" became one of the most used pad sounds of the late 1980s. "Digital Native Dance" — born when an engineer accidentally combined multiple phonemes into a single loop and Persing heard it and said "that was nice" — became another signature. Persing also created the "Hoover" sound on the D-50, which became foundational in early rave and hardcore. He later went on to found Spectrasonics and create Omnisphere.

Built-in Effects

The D-50 was the first performance synthesizer to integrate DSP effects — reverb, delay, chorus, and two-band EQ built in as a core part of the design rather than an afterthought. This meant patches sounded finished and studio-ready straight from the keyboard, with no outboard gear required. The spacious quality of those effects became synonymous with late-1980s production. The joystick added real-time control of tone and partial balance during performance.

Practical Points

Sixteen voices of polyphony in single mode (eight in dual or split). The 61-key keyboard has both velocity and aftertouch sensitivity. Internal storage covers 64 patches, with additional capacity via the M-256E memory card. The PG-1000 programmer, sold separately, gave hands-on physical control of nearly every parameter — units that come with one command a premium on the used market.

Modern Versions

Roland's Cloud version of the D-50 uses DCB (Digital Circuit Behavior) technology — a circuit-level model rather than a straight emulation, recreating the "overtone noise" that gave the original its warmth. The D-05 Roland Boutique is the compact hardware version, using the same DCB engine in a small desktop format.

Who Is This For?

Producers chasing authentic late-1980s and early-1990s textures — the D-50 is the source, not a sample. Collectors who want a central piece of digital synthesis history at a price well below vintage analog equivalents. Sound designers drawn to LA synthesis as a genuinely distinctive approach. Used prices have climbed steadily: good-condition units sell for £400–£550, excellent examples £550–£750.
