Roland SH-101

Sound and Architecture

At the heart of the SH-101 is a single VCO built around the Curtis CEM3340 chip, offering sawtooth, pulse, and square waveforms with pulse width modulation. A dedicated sub-oscillator (one or two octaves below) adds serious low-end weight, making this synth a bass machine. The mixer section lets you blend the main oscillator, sub-oscillator, and a noise generator before hitting the filter. The 24dB/oct low-pass VCF features a cutoff range of 10Hz to 20kHz and resonance that goes all the way to self-oscillation, perfect for those classic acid-style sweeps and screaming leads.

Modulation and Sequencing

The LFO offers triangle, square, random, and noise waveforms for modulation, and there is a handy auto-bend feature for pitch drops and rises at note onset. The built-in arpeggiator handles up, down, and up/down patterns, while the 100-step sequencer lets you program patterns on the fly. Portamento (glide) adds smooth pitch transitions between notes. The ADSR envelope provides attack times from 1.5ms to 4 seconds and decay/release times from 2ms to 10 seconds, giving you everything from snappy plucks to slow pads.

The SH-101 features a 32-key keyboard and was designed to be portable. It can run on batteries and has strap pegs so you can wear it like a keytar with the optional handgrip/modulation attachment.
