The Roland SP-404MKII is the modern evolution of the legendary SP-404 sampler — the instrument that defined lo-fi hip-hop and portable beat-making. With a graphic OLED display, expanded memory, improved workflow, and 58 onboard effects, it brings the iconic SP sound into the present.

Sampling and Workflow

Sample directly from the built-in mic, line input, or resample internally. The graphic OLED display shows waveforms for precise start/end point editing and sample trimming — a huge upgrade from the original's blind sample management. Each project holds 160 samples across 16 pads and 10 banks, with 16GB of internal storage providing room for massive libraries.

Chromatic mode lets you play samples melodically across the pads. Skip Back Sampling captures the last few seconds of audio, so you never miss a moment. The pattern sequencer records your pad performances with velocity and timing, building beats through live playing rather than step programming.

Effects

The SP-404 series is famous for its effects, and the MKII delivers 41 multi-effects plus 17 input effects. The signature Vinyl Simulator adds crackle and warmth. DJFX Looper, filter sweeps, and isolation effects make it a performance instrument. Apply effects in real-time to individual pads or the master output — this is where the SP-404's live character comes alive.

Portability

Running on 6 AA batteries with a built-in speaker, the SP-404MKII is genuinely portable. USB-C provides audio interface functionality when connected to a computer, and the unit charges while connected. Create entire tracks on the train, in the park, or on the couch.
