Roland TR-808

The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer is one of the most iconic drum machines ever made. Released in 1980, it was designed as a professional tool for creating demos, but its distinctive analog-synthesized sounds—particularly the deep, booming kick drum—transformed it into a cornerstone of modern music production.

Unlike sample-based drum machines, the 808 generates all its sounds through analog synthesis. This gives it a unique character that's impossible to replicate exactly. The famous 808 kick, with its long, subsonic decay, came about partly by accident—Roland's engineers used faulty transistors that gave the sound its distinctive sizzle and punch. The 16 drum sounds include kick, snare, toms, congas, rimshot, claves, handclap, maracas, cowbell, cymbal, and hi-hats.

The step sequencer was revolutionary for its time. Users can program up to 32 patterns, chain them into songs up to 768 measures long, and work in unusual time signatures like 5/4 or 7/8. Each sound has individual volume controls and outputs, making it easy to process drums separately. Most sounds offer some editing—the kick and cymbal have tone and decay controls, the snare has tone and snappy parameters, and the toms and congas can be tuned.

Originally a commercial failure (only 12,000 units were made before production ended in 1983), the 808 found new life in underground music scenes. Its affordability on the used market and distinctive sounds made it essential to the development of hip-hop, electro, and house music. Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" (1982) was the first US hit to feature it prominently.

Who Is This For?

  • Vintage synth collectors seeking an authentic piece of music history
  • Producers who want the real analog 808 sound, not samples or emulations
  • Electronic musicians working in hip-hop, electro, or techno who value hands-on hardware
  • Studios looking for a conversation piece that still delivers sonically

Original TR-808s now command premium prices on the used market—a far cry from their original $1,195 retail price. If you're after the 808 sound without the investment, Roland's TR-08 boutique recreation or the many quality samples and plugins available are practical alternatives. But for the real thing, nothing quite matches the experience of programming patterns on the original hardware.
