The Roland HP702 is a home digital piano designed to deliver a convincing acoustic piano experience in a traditional upright cabinet. Powered by Roland's SuperNATURAL Piano modeling technology, it recreates the complex harmonic interactions, resonances, and key-off behaviors of a real grand piano in real time. With 324 onboard tones, Bluetooth connectivity, and a furniture-grade enclosure, the HP702 targets serious home players who want authentic piano feel and sound without the maintenance demands of an acoustic instrument.
SuperNATURAL Piano Sound Engine
The HP702's SuperNATURAL engine does not rely on static samples. Instead, it models the behavior of an acoustic piano dynamically, responding to how hard you strike the keys, how long you hold them, and how you use the pedals. This means you get natural-sounding sympathetic resonance, string damping, and tonal variation that changes with your playing. In Piano mode, polyphony is effectively unlimited, so you never run into dropped notes during sustained pedal passages. For the 324 non-piano tones, including electric pianos, organs, strings, and choirs, polyphony is 384 notes.
Keyboard Action and Build
The PHA-4 Standard keyboard with escapement and ivory-feel surfaces delivers a progressive hammer action that gets heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble, mimicking the feel of a grand piano action. The three-pedal unit uses progressive damper action that provides realistic half-pedal control. The whole instrument sits in a wooden cabinet available in charcoal black, white, light oak, and dark rosewood finishes, blending into a living room or studio without looking out of place.
Connectivity and Modern Features
Bluetooth Audio and MIDI let you stream music wirelessly through the HP702's 28-watt speaker system or connect to apps like the Roland Piano App for lessons and practice tools. USB ports (both A and B types) handle computer recording, MIDI data, and USB memory for song playback. A Headphones 3D Ambience feature creates an immersive spatial sound when practicing with headphones, reducing the flat, in-your-head feeling that plagues many digital pianos.
Who Is This For?
- Intermediate to advanced pianists who want a dedicated home instrument with authentic grand piano feel
- Families looking for a quality piano that doubles as a stylish piece of furniture
- Students preparing for exams or recitals who need realistic key action and pedal response
- Anyone replacing an acoustic upright who wants lower maintenance and silent practice via headphones
The HP702 is the entry point to Roland's HP series, and it delivers a level of piano realism that justifies its premium over portable stage pianos. If your priority is a great piano playing experience at home with the convenience of digital features, this is a strong choice.
