The Roland TR-6S is a compact, battery-powered drum machine that packs the same sound engine as the larger TR-8S into a unit small enough to fit in a bag. It combines three synthesis approaches in a single instrument — ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) models of the TR-808, TR-909, TR-606, TR-707, and CR-78; FM synthesis with 72 editable tones; and sample playback with over 300 preset samples plus user sample support. The result is a drum machine that covers classic Roland sounds and original textures in equal measure.
Who Is This For?
The TR-6S suits producers who want authentic Roland TR sounds in a portable format — the kind of machine you can take to a rehearsal, run from batteries on a plane, or add to a live rig without adding much weight. At around £345 new it sits significantly below the TR-8S, making it an accessible entry point into the TR ecosystem. The advanced sequencer, with probability, sub-steps, and motion recording, gives it more depth than its price and size suggest. It works well as a standalone drum machine, a USB audio interface, or a companion to a larger setup.
Triple Synthesis Engine
Each of the six instrument tracks can draw from any of the three synthesis engines. The ACB engine circuit-models the classic Roland drum machines with the same attention to detail found in the TR-8S and the Boutique series — the 808 kick, 909 snare, and 606 hi-hats all behave like their originals, responding to parameter changes the way the hardware does. The FM engine adds 72 editable tones built for percussion — metallic transients, tuned hits, and abstract textures that go beyond what the ACB models cover. Preset and user samples fill out the rest.
Sequencer
The TR-6S uses the same sequencer architecture as the TR-8S. Each pattern has 16 steps with eight variations (A–H) and two fill-in patterns. Advanced features include sub-steps for adding extra subdivisions within a single step, flam, step loop, motion recording for automating parameter changes, and probability controls at both the step and master level. These aren't simplified versions of the TR-8S features — they are the same features.
Portability and Connectivity
The TR-6S runs on four AA batteries (around five hours on alkaline) or USB bus power, making it one of the few drum machines in its class that works entirely without a power outlet. It outputs stereo via a standard 1/4" jack and includes full-size MIDI DIN in and out. Via USB it functions as a six-channel audio interface, streaming each instrument track separately into a DAW alongside a stereo mix.
TR-6S vs TR-8S
The sound engine is identical — same ACB models, same FM tones, same sample engine. The TR-8S has eleven tracks versus six, dedicated per-channel knobs and faders, a direct sampling input, and a velocity-sensitive pad for tap entry. The TR-6S trades those features for a dramatically smaller footprint, battery power, and a lower price. If you need more tracks or direct sampling, the TR-8S is worth the extra cost. If portability or budget is the priority, you lose nothing in the sound department.
