u-he Diva is widely considered the most authentic-sounding virtual analog synthesizer available. Released in 2011, it models classic analog circuits at the component level, producing the warmth, instability, and character of vintage hardware.
Mix and Match Architecture
The modular architecture lets you combine oscillator and filter sections from different classic synths — five oscillator models and five filter models inspired by hardware from Moog, Roland, Korg, and others. Mix Jupiter-8 oscillators with Minimoog filters, or pair MS-20 oscillators with Juno-60 chorus. This flexibility creates sounds no single hardware synth could produce. Each combination has its own character, and the interaction between different oscillator and filter topologies is where Diva's creative potential lives.
Zero-Delay Feedback Modeling
Sound quality comes from zero-delay feedback (ZDF) filter algorithms and accurate nonlinear modeling of analog circuit behavior. The result captures the subtle imperfections of analog hardware — oscillator drift, filter saturation, and the organic movement that makes analog recordings feel alive. Many producers A/B Diva against vintage hardware and cannot reliably tell the difference.
CPU and Workflow
CPU usage is high but justified by the modeling accuracy. Three quality modes — Draft, Great, and Divine — let you compose with lower CPU load and render at full accuracy. The Trimmers panel adds fine-tuning: oscillator drift amount, tuning slew rate, filter feedback saturation, and envelope behavior. These subtle adjustments make each patch feel like an individual instrument rather than a generic preset.
Who Is This For?
Diva suits producers prioritizing analog authenticity:
- Synthwave and retro producers wanting accurate vintage tones
- Mix engineers adding analog warmth in the box
- Hardware enthusiasts who can't afford or maintain vintage synths
- Sound designers wanting organic, living sounds with real drift and movement
- Producers who A/B tested every soft synth and chose the one that sounds like hardware
For modern wavetable design, look to Serum. For the closest software approximation of vintage analog, Diva remains the benchmark.
