Native Instruments Massive X launched in 2019 as the successor to the original Massive, which defined dubstep and EDM bass sounds for a decade. Built from scratch with a new audio engine, it offers expanded sound design capabilities while retaining that recognizable NI character.
Oscillators and Routing
Two wavetable oscillators provide 170+ wavetables with 10 different modes each — standard, bend, formant, mirror, gorilla, hardsync, and others that transform wavetables in ways unique to Massive X. The flexible routing system goes beyond simple serial chains: oscillators, noise generators, and an insert section can be connected in various configurations, with the routing panel providing visual feedback of the signal flow.
Modulation System
Performers are Massive X's distinctive modulation source — macro-style controllers that combine multiple modulation targets into single, playable parameters. Nine envelope types range from simple ADSR to complex multi-stage shapes. LFOs include standard shapes plus random, sample-and-hold, and envelope-triggered modes. The modulation routing uses color-coded assignment with visual feedback on every knob, though it requires more learning than simple drag-and-drop systems.
Effects and Processing
Three insert effects sit within the signal routing for per-voice processing, while two global sends handle shared effects like reverb and delay. The insert effects include dimension expander, frequency shifter, and various distortion and filter types. The noise section offers both pitched and unpitched noise with dedicated filtering — useful for adding breath, air, and texture to patches.
Who Is This For?
Massive X suits producers wanting NI ecosystem integration and modern wavetable synthesis:
- Komplete owners who already have it in their bundle
- Bass music producers wanting unique oscillator modes for original sounds
- Sound designers exploring the deep routing and modulation system
- NI Maschine and Kontrol users wanting tight hardware integration
- Producers who valued the original Massive and want its modern successor
For maximum third-party preset availability, Serum has the larger ecosystem. For unique oscillator modes and NI integration, Massive X delivers.
