The Arturia MicroFreak is a hybrid synthesizer that pairs diverse digital oscillator modes with an analog filter, all controlled via an unconventional capacitive touch keyboard. It's affordable, weird, and remarkably capable — and free firmware updates have expanded it well beyond its original feature set.
Oscillators and Sound
The oscillator section now offers 21 different modes thanks to continued firmware updates: virtual analog, wavetable, FM, Karplus-Strong plucked strings, superwave, harmonic, and modes licensed from Mutable Instruments (Plaits) and Noise Engineering. Firmware v5 added three granular engines (Scan Grains, Cloud Grains, Hit Grains) and sample playback, letting you import your own audio and manipulate it granularly. The MicroFreak is 4-voice paraphonic — you can play up to four notes simultaneously, though all voices share a single analog filter.
Filter and Modulation
The analog 12dB state-variable filter provides low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass modes. Combined with the digital oscillators, it adds warmth while maintaining deep sound design possibilities. The modulation system includes a cycling envelope, standard envelope, LFO, and a mod matrix for routing any source to multiple destinations. The sequencer offers 64 polyphonic steps, and the arpeggiator features unique "spice" and "dice" controls that introduce musical randomization.
Keyboard and Presets
The capacitive touch keyboard divides opinion but enables polyphonic aftertouch and per-note pressure at a fraction of traditional key cost. The synth holds 512 preset slots with over 300 factory presets covering pads, leads, basses, effects, and experimental textures. The MIDI Control Center software handles preset management and firmware updates.
